Power of Rhetoric
Rhetoric is not a concept that can be condensed into a simple definition. It can be considered an art or a study. Some see rhetoric as a negative concept, while others see it as a positive tool. One thing that is universal about rhetoric is that it's used through the power of communication
Throughtout this class we have disscussed the defintion of rhetoric and what it means to be a rhetorician. There are many different ways we explain rhetoric and we spent time exploring this by reading Gorgias by Plato. In Plato's writing he provides an insight into a conversation between Gorgias and Socrates. Gorgias tells Socrates that rhetoric is his art and Socrates has some quesitons.
Gorgias tells Socrates that rhetoric relates to the greatest and best of human things. That being the individual power to rule over several states. Having the ability to persuade and change peoples way of thinking is a great power. It seems that someone who's aim is to take power over others can easily use that for evil and will if that is their goal.

Just as you said, rhetoric can not be condensed into one definition, but I do believe that we all have somewhat similar ideas as to what rhetoric is. I believe this even though some can see it as a negative thing, or a positive thing. I believe we can all agree that rhetoric is is used through communication just as you had mentioned.I think we can all also agree that rhetoric is used in a persuasive manner.
ReplyDeleteThe power of rhetoric certainly cant be put into a positive or negative category as you said. Depending on the persons interpreted use. The idea of what rhetoric truly is can be mostly agreed on. Its definitely put to use through communication and is also regardless of the intended outcome, a form of persuasion. I agree with your opinions on "The Power of Rhetoric".
ReplyDeleteI agree, rhetoric can't be described as positive or negative because it's to each's own. Some see it as a money maker to profit them selves and some can also see it as a money maker, but it's their money being spent... if that makes sense. All in all I think regardless of ones outlook on rhetoric everyone can agree it is a persuasive form of communication as you had said above which I feel is a key part of information for someone who is new to studying rhetoric.
